Ash Slemming is a creative; an artist, curator, designer, writer, and arts educator; a wearer of many hats. Since 2015, they have worked with a variety of artists and arts organizations, each creatively engaging in visual and cultural storytelling projects in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.
Ash has developed programs and exhibitions with Alberta Printmakers, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition (TREX) Program, Alberta University of the Arts, Colouring it Forward, Exposure Photography Festival, Illingworth Kerr Gallery, and the Marion Nicoll Gallery.
Ash studied Information Design as part of a Communications degree program at Mount Royal University, later transitioning to a fine arts program to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Print Media from the Alberta University of the Arts (formerly Alberta College of Art and Design). Their studies and various collaborative work experiences prompted a deep interest towards intersectionality within art, aesthetics, and community – leading them to prioritize projects that encourage curiosity and critical discourse.
Ash endeavours to create art, exhibitions, and projects that inspire care, curiosity, and change in the world. Sometimes this means inspiring joy, play, silliness - sometimes this means projects that are deeply contemplative. Each new project is approached with purposeful vision, with the intent of inviting reflection and dialogue around multifaceted human experiences.
In the spirit of reconciliation, I acknowledge that I live, work, play, and learn on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 5 and 6), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. I am committed to continual learning and growth toward shared knowledge and understanding, and I hope to build a better world collaboratively alongside those who know the land and the earth intimately and relationally.
